Overview

Nasi Kandar Hijrah, nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Taman Molek, Johor Bahru, offers an authentic Indian Muslim dining experience that captures the essence of traditional nasi kandar. This spot is highly regarded for its robust flavors and efficient service despite the steady crowd it draws, especially around meal times. The atmosphere is casual yet vibrant, making it suitable for solo diners and small groups, though larger parties may find seating a bit challenging during peak hours.

The menu boasts a strong lineup of signature dishes, with the Lamb Shank standing out as a hearty, slow-cooked marvel rich in spices that penetrate the tender meat. The Set Ayam Goreng 1/4—a quarter portion of specially seasoned, crispy fried chicken—is a crowd favorite, praised for its balance of spice and savory depth. Complementing the mains, the Kari Kepala Ikan offers a flavorful fish head curry, a dish that marries spiciness with creamy, aromatic gravy, showcasing the complexity typical of Indian Muslim cuisine.

Beyond mains, Nasi Kandar Hijrah excels in its vegetable offerings such as the Kobis Goreng and Kacang Panjang—fresh vegetables lightly stir-fried with traditional spices that maintain natural sweetness and a satisfyingly crisp texture. These sides provide a fresh counterpoint to the rich gravies and fried dishes, adding balance to the meal.

Drinks like the classic Thumbs Up soda and the refreshing Cendol Original offer perfect palate cleansers, enhancing the overall dining experience. Customers have noted the kuah campur (mixed gravy) as flavorful without being overpoweringly salty, resonating well with those familiar with Penang-style nasi kandar.

The experience at Nasi Kandar Hijrah is characterized by its quick service amidst a lively queue, reflecting the efficient management and popularity among both locals and visitors craving genuine flavors. The staff's respectful and attentive service adds warmth to a setting that can otherwise feel hectic. This makes it an excellent destination for those who appreciate rich, indulgent meals served without long waits and in a welcoming environment.

For anyone drawn to authentic Indian Muslim cuisine, whether a local or traveler, Nasi Kandar Hijrah demands a spot in your dining itinerary. The portions are generous, inviting shared enjoyment and exploration of the diverse menu. In this interplay of spice, texture, and aroma, the restaurant successfully captures the heart of nasi kandar, making every visit a satisfying culinary journey.

The food here is unbelievably sedap (delicious)—the flavour is rich and truly authentic! Food Tip: If you're looking to try their most incredible or 'must-have' dishes, be warned: they are huge and rich! You really need to share them to get through it all and try a variety. Bring a friend! I was surprised by the crowd, even cross-lunch time (around 3 PM), but what amazed me is how quickly the queue was moving. For seating, since I dined alone, getting a spot wasn't an issue. However, I noticed that if you were to dine with more than three people, it can be quite tough to secure a table. Nonetheless, this Nasi Kandar experience is absolutely worthy.

The queue was quite long, but no worries , you’ll be served very fast as there are plenty of seats available. However, the price left me with some questions since just a basic ayam + nasi already cost me around RM40. Menu I tried: Kuah Banjir – I asked for a sweeter gravy and it was nearly perfect; you could really taste all the flavors mixing together. Ayam Bawang – This didn’t quite meet my expectations as it was a bit too spicy and had less bawang than I hoped. Please consider adding more bawang. Ayam goreng is just ayam goreng, nothing special lah.

This restaurant is crowded eventhough it's way past lunch time. Not to worry though coz the staffs are super efficient and soon it's your turn . The portions are quite big so two servings shared by 4 pax. The classic ayam goreng berempah can never go wrong ... crispy spiced coated skin outside with juicy meat. Love the selections of vege dishes. The sambal style brinjal is soft and flavourful. The bitter gourd chips tossed in curry spices and the potatoes are delicious. The bean sprouts stir fry still has some crunch. The thick slice of ikan tenggiri in curry is an absolute marvel with thick spiced curry. The begedil is of course a comfort food which goes so well with the kuah campur banjir. The salted egg and crispy papadom adds additional flavour to the nasi kandar. Washed off the meal with abang mamak's special teh tarik, ginger tea and the cooling coconut drink .... indeed a satisfying meal. Come for lunch, left in a curry coma.

Overall the nasi kandar here is nice. They have a lot of dishes to choose from. Took the lamb shank which is RM37 by itself. If you just take the chicken and other stuff, should be below RM20.
